What does the “Accial” in Accial Capital mean? I get this question a lot. Here’s the story:

Accial = “Axial” + “Access”

The “Axial” Age was a term coined by philosopher Karl Jaspers (see picture) to describe a period when groundbreaking ideas (like those of Confucius, Socrates, Buddha and others) emerged across the world in a quick burst of intellectual progress. It was so revolutionary that Jaspers stated it was as if the earth had been titled on its Axis. There was something about 2018 that felt “Axial” (keep reading).

The “Access” in our name represents our commitment to the expansion of responsible credit and financial wellbeing.

When we launched Accial in 2018, we recognized that data and technology were allowing a remarkable set of new, innovative lending companies to fill the stubborn financial exclusion gaps across emerging markets. As the biggest population cohorts in our markets enter their “credit age”, the opportunity for inclusion and impact continues to grow. We are living in an Axial age of Access to credit.

For us, Accial isn’t just a name—it’s an “earth-tilting” vision of widespread global financial wellness as the global population approaches its peak. A touch grandiose? Heck yeah! We’ll own it.
